RE-WIRE YOUR BRAIN

Re-wiring your brain is what Health Transformation is about. Neuroplasticity can change the story of your life.

Good evening, it is May 24th, 2022 and 5:30 pm here in India. I am Dr. Aneeta Madhok, Coaching Psychologist and Integrative Nutrition Health Coach.

This is the fifth circle I am hosting on my channel Integrative Health. I am an Integrative Nutrition Health coach qualified from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition in the US. By profession, I am a Coaching Psychologist and I went through a self-healing health transformation a few years ago. I coach people to lead healthy and vibrant lives, with a special focus on diabetes and obesity. Because I am a psychologist, for Health Coaching I focus on the mind-body, Heart and Soul of my clients. Each client is on his or her own journey and the coaching helps achieve many milestones along the say.

The last four circles, we focused on how we Nourish our Mind, and our Body, our Heart and our Soul.

Today we discuss the ‘how’ behind some of the health transformations I have witnessed.

Is it possible to re-wire your brain? Yes, that’s what learning new behaviours is about. How does it work? Well, there is a concept of Neuroplasticity I want to introduce to you. In my first circle on Mentza, I had discussed how to nourish the mind. There was a quotation I had read out which I want to repeat here: Its called the Law of Thoughts, attributed to Gautam Buddha:

 

Watch your thoughts, for they become your Words

Watch your words, for they become Actions

Watch your actions, for they become Habits

Watch your Habits, for they become Character

Watch your character or they become your Destiny.

So, if your thoughts can change your destiny, it is a logical conclusion, that if you change your thoughts, you change everything! The key lies in changing the thoughts.

In the brain, are many neural networks. Some 86 Billion neurons, or nerve cells, each one has the capacity to make connections with many others…. Up to 1000 trillion connections. The numbers are not important, but we can recognize that the brain gets increasingly hardwired, meaning these connections get stronger and stronger, the more the electrical current passes through them. Repeated electrical current passing through any particular neural network strengthens the connection and the brain gets more and more hardwired. So, if I create a new neural network (meaning I learn a new behaviour, or change my story, or create positive thoughts) then the new network gets strengthened. They say that it takes anywhere from 18 to 250 days to create a new habit or a new way of thinking. So the more I pass electrical impulse through a new network, the stronger it becomes. Old neural networks get forgotten when there is no electrical impulse passing through it.

This is the concept of neuroplasticity. New neural networks can impact total behaviour change and Buddha knew it much before modern day science came in.

The concept of Neuroplasticity is the fulcrum of my work as a Health Coach. People transform their lives by changing their stories, replacing old patterns of thought with new patterns, learning optimism instead of pessimism, and thinking positive instead of negative. Applying Neuroplasticity to bring change is irreversible. Now there are many techniques to apply this concept, but that is a subject for another time!
